Custom sofa

LUWISS designs your furniture adapted to your needs and personalized according to your preferences, to take care of our health and our planet.

A LUWISS custom sofa is a real custom sofa where you can choose everything. Absolutely everything!

Measurements

Your space is limited or you have a large area to fill. Or your room is non-standard and nothing you find fits. Your custom sofa will be created taking into account every detail for a perfect harmony with your environment and your needs.

Comfort

There’s no such thing as universal comfort. We all have our own preferences, or sometimes a health condition that requires adapted comfort. Your custom sofa will be as comfortable as you want it to be, since you decide which of our material options available will suit your needs and preferences.

Shapes / Design

Your custom sofa will have the design and appearance you want: straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, with rounded or straight shapes, flush with the floor or with airy legs, with topstitching, buttons, flutes, cords, and so on. It’s your sofa. The choice is yours.

Covering

Whether your preference is for touch, aesthetics, ethics or special needs, you can choose from certified 100% natural or non-toxic synthetic fabrics, full-grain leather, vinyl and even cat-proof* fabrics.

Miscellaneous

Your space is limited or you have a large area to fill. Or your room is non-standard and nothing you find fits. Your made-to-measure sofa will be created taking into account all the details for a perfect harmony with your environment and your needs.

Long lasting wooden frames

LUWISS custom sofa frames are made of Norway maple and Russian cherry plywood. Norway maple is an invasive species here in North America and its harvest helps preserve our sugar maple forests. Russian type plywood is an ultra durable and stable material. Also available in FSC certified plywood option with non-toxic Purebound adhesive without VOC.

You also have the option of having the structure of your furniture made from ash wood from the Montreal Island. This is a way of giving sustainability to these trees that unfortunately must be cut down to limit the spread of the emerald ash borer. This gives access to a locally produced material. Thank you to Bois Public for this initiative.

The design of the structures in independent elements and assembled by bolts and nuts gives them exceptional durability. It is not for no reasons LUWISS offers a lifetime warranty on its sofa frames*. This also allows the furniture to be easily dismantled for moving. They can be installed in tight access spaces. They can also be modified to evolve with you over time.

Suspension options

The suspension system is what supports the padding (cushions) on the seats and backs. No matter your criteria, your custom sofa will be comfortable and its suspension will be durable. Note that only the first 3 options are offered for custom sofas. You can test these different options and choose the one that best suits your comfort preferences.

Wooden platform

Wooden suspensions are the most durable and economical. By making the right choice, you will have great comfort for years. Children can jump on them without any hassle.

Sinuous springs

For a little more responsiveness, sinuous springs with metal anchors and stabilizers are very durable, lasting up to 50+ years depending on use.

Sangles de jute

Jute belts

Especially recommended for smaller seating areas, jute straps are ultra durable and comfortable when choosing the right stuffings.

Sheathed springs

They are very durable and very responsive. They are found on Danish-style furniture. More expensive, their installation is not suitable for all seat types. Available only for reupholstery projects.

Suspension by elastic straps crossed and fixed to a sofa seat structure

Elastic belts

Least durable type of suspension. However, it is easy to install and affordable. The quality of the straps can increase durability. Not recommended.

Coil Spring Mounting Details

Coil springs

Responsive and durable suspension system up to 40-50 years if installed according to standards. Requires a lot of time and materials and can become very expensive. Not available for custom sofas.

Removable or fixed cushions

This is a detail that often goes unnoticed, but can make all the difference in fully appreciating your custom sofa. Both options have their advantages and limitations. The important thing is to choose the one that best meets your needs.

Sectional sofa with chaise longue and removable seat and back cushions

Removable cushions

Here the cushions are placed on the seat and the back. They can be removed and are generally reversible, which allows them to be worn on both sides for greater durability. This type of construction requires more fabric, but makes it easier to clean the covers and allows the cushion fillings to be easily replaced over time if needed.

Fixed cushions: integrated padding

Here, the stuffing is integrated into the furniture. It cannot be removed from the seat and it is not possible to wear it on both sides, which can make the covering less durable. This type of manufacturing requires less fabric, hence the importance of choosing the fabric to facilitate maintenance and maximize its durability.

Upholstery options

You can add a personalized touch to your custom sofa. More often for aesthetic reasons and sometimes for practical ones, for example  to mold shapes. Many upholstery effects can be created for unique designs.

Sewing options

It wouldn’t be a custom-made sofa if it weren’t for this little detail that makes the difference. It may also be found in the stitching types you can choose from. Apart from the simple topstitching that provides more robustness, these are purely aesthetic choices.

Covering choice

Choosing a custom-made sofa also and above all means being able to choose the covering for your furniture.

Not all coverings are suitable for all furniture. There are almost endless possibilities and options. So, you have to find the right one that will best suit your needs and preferences.

Do you live alone or do you have a bunch of children at home? Will the furniture be mainly decorative or will it be used daily? Do you suffer from a particular condition or allergy to certain products or fibers? Do you have pets, cats that scratch your furniture? All of these and many other aspects can influence your choice, well beyond the fabric colour and its texture.

Wood or metal leg options

Legs are an important element of any custom sofa. They can be chosen to highlight them or to make them invisible, as if the sofa were floating on the floor.

It is possible to create almost any shape of wooden legs. The heights are also variable according to your preferences.

It is also possible to choose from metal legs from our supplier. See examples HERE.
