Steps to create your custom sofa
A custom-made sofa is a sofa that doesn’t exist yet. So it’s not a sofa that you can order and then wait for its delivery.
Here are the main steps during which you will be accompanied to come together to create your future completely customized sofa.
Needs / Budget
Identifying your needs helps determine what is important to you: how you want to use your sofa? Do you have any special needs? Do you have a family?, animals? Do you have a budget to stick to?
Dimensions & Style
A fully custom sofa means being able to decide everything. During a meeting, you can choose, among other things: the style, the dimensions, the materials, the fabric (or leather or vinyl), the comforts, some upholstery features, the number and type of cushions, the feet. Everything!
3D Sketch
Once the needs and crafting details have been identified, a 3D sketch is created. It gives a glimpse of the future sofa before it is fabricated. This allows you to validate your choices so that the furniture is designed exactly as you want it.
Making
Time to craft your custom sofa. Made from Norwegian maple wood and plywood, the frame is upholstered. If desired, you are then invited to come to validate and confirm your comfort choices. When we say it’s custom-made, it goes down to these details.
Delivery
Your custom sofa is ready to be delivered and installed in your home. We finish assembling it upon delivery. So you can see how to proceed to disassemble and reassemble it if necessary. They are easy to assemble and they can be moved to hard-to-reach places.

FAQ
Here are the most frequently asked questions about LUWISS and our services.
Find some general answers here in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
Does ECO in LUWISS ECO sofas mean that our furniture is made entirely of natural materials?
The term ECO in LUWISS ECO sofa means especially that our furniture is designed to last a very long time and can even be passed on to your children and grandchildren. It also means that we have taken care to offer material and upholstery options that are free of products that are harmful to health. Finally, we have also sought to offer local materials and products (from as close as possible to the place of processing).
If desired, LUWISS furniture can be made entirely of natural materials, even the threads used to sew the fabric pieces can be made of cotton. On request, the materials and fabrics you can choose from will then be presented to you and your custom-made sofa -or any other custom-made upholstered furniture project- will be created according to the choices you have made.
We also offer synthetic materials, often made from petroleum (polyurethane, polyester) as options for the manufacture of our custom furniture as well as for upholstery projects. The main reason why we also offer synthetic materials is to reduce costs and prices.
Some materials and fabrics are made from recycled or recovered materials, but the latter are often also made of synthetic materials. On the other hand, LUWISS has taken care to have the upholstery materials we use tested, to ensure that they do not emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and thus limit the impact on health. Some fabrics have non toxic or natural certifications i.e. Oeko Tex Standard 100, GOTS, EcoCert…

Do you have a demo room for your furniture?
LUWISS crafts custom-made sofas and each piece of furniture is unique or made in small numbers depending on each project. We do not have a showroom where models are already offered and available to order.
We have some examples of small demonstrator sofas (armchairs) that allow you to see and understand how our custom sofas are made. We also have a demo piece of furniture that allows you to do comfort tests, validate the dimensions and ergonomics of each sofa.
A three-dimensional (3D) sketch is drawn for each custom furniture project we design. These sketches allow you to have a much more precise idea of the final result and allow you to specify details in dimensions, shapes, appearances, etc. You will even be able to make your future sofa(s) appear in your dedicated space with a mobile device or electronic tablet. These devices are not supplied by LUWISS. You need to have your own devices to take advantage of this technology.
Is LUWISS furniture guaranteed and do you offer refunds?
GUARANTEE
LUWISS furniture is guaranteed by La loi de la protection du consommateur du Québec for residents of the province. In summary, this law stipulates that a minimum guarantee must be offered for a good according to its value and not according to a fixed period. Manufacturers and merchants may impose a warranty expiry date, but it must be reasonable based on the price paid by the consumer.
Wooden frames on our custom-made sofas are guaranteed for life. This warranty does not include the furniture of customers for whom we offer upholstery and repair services. In this case, the guarantee offered by the aforementioned law applies.
The LUWISS Lifetime Warranty applies to structures only and cannot be applied to padding, fabrics (or other upholstery materials), suspension systems (straps, springs), or hinged metal mechanisms (as found on reclining furniture or with opening mechanism). This warranty does not cover defects, malfunctions, or damage resulting from misuse, abuse, improper maintenance or storage, exposure to excessive conditions, or failure to follow installation instructions. This warranty applies to residential (non-commercial) use only. It applies to the original purchaser only and is not transferable and cannot be extended.
REIMBURSEMENT
The Consumer Protection Act does not require a merchant to offer a refund. LUWISS is a small artisan business and we cannot afford to offer a refund on our furniture.
Our furniture are designed to last, although durability can vary from one piece of furniture to another, depending on the choices made by each customer. If a problem arises, appropriate corrections or solutions are made for each situation. The age of your furniture and the use you have made of it will then be taken into account.
LUWISS offers unparalleled after-sales service and we offer warranty services often well after several years.
Can we supply our materials and fabrics?
The official answer is no.
We only work with the materials with which we have developed our products. We also only work with fabrics and upholstery materials (leather, imitation leather, vinyl) from our suppliers and having been chosen from our samples.
Some exceptional cases may apply, but this will need to be discussed in advance and mutually agreed.
Like any trader, LUWISS makes a profit on the sale of its materials and fabrics. Without this benefit, it would not be possible for us to make our services profitable enough to stay in business.
Why are custom furniture and upholstery services more expensive than furniture sold in department stores?
One might think that paying less is the best solution and that those who charge more to do a job are only doing it to extort customers as much as possible. In our case, the opposite is true. The biggest scammers are those who offer low-cost items that are designed to be thrown away and then replaced… quickly. In short, it is planned obsolescence. This is what keeps the economy going, some would say, but it is rather the consumers who are being fooled here.
This is one of the reasons why the cost of custom tailoring and upholstery services is more expensive than furniture sold on the market: a craftsman who respects his customers will offer materials, fabrics, upholstery and also manufacturing and tailoring methods that are of better quality and more durable. And these materials are often a little more expensive from the start. And sustainable crafting methods also take a little longer to make, which tends to increase the cost.
Another element that a craftsman must deal with is his purchasing power. We are well aware of the “COSCO” principle where the more items of the same product are bought at a time, the lower the price of each unit. A furniture manufacturing factory takes advantage of this advantage since it can order, for example, 10K (ten thousand) meters of the same fabric to make the 1000 pieces of furniture they want to produce. The price per meter of the fabric will be much cheaper than if a craftsman buys only a few meters for a specific project. And this is reflected in the price sold.
Finally, designing a custom-made piece of furniture requires as much time as designing a piece of furniture that will be mass-produced in very large numbers. Drawing the shapes, creating the patterns, correcting them and starting over to get a final result takes time. If you only make one unique custom sofa as a result of all this work, then the cost of developing these models and patterns is absorbed in the price of that piece of furniture alone. But if you have a mass production plant and you plan to produce 1000 pieces of furniture after developing your shapes and patterns, then the cost is spread over those thousand pieces of furniture and not just one, as is the case with custom furniture. Obviously, mass production reduces the cost for design and development and therefore offers lower prices for furniture sold on the market.
Care tips for your LUWISS furniture.
Although our LUWISS custom sofas are solidly assembled when delivered, the bolts and nuts with which they are assembled can loosen over time. To ensure maximum preservation of your furniture, it is recommended to check the solidity of the furniture once a year or as needed, depending on the intensity of use of your sofas.
LUWISS furniture has been designed so that the bolts assembling the furniture are easily accessible. Note that for the very first LUWISS furniture (2013-2015), access to the bolts in the backrests can be more difficult. This has been rectified in the more recent and current furniture.
Watch this video to guide you on how to check the solidity of the bolts of your LUWISS sofa and, if necessary, how to tighten them. Clic HERE
WHERE TO FIND THE BOLTS
They are generally found in two places:
- under the seat
- inside the backrest, on each side of the armrests.
On some furniture, this access may be limited by a fiber that closes the underside of the seat. This fiber is only aesthetic. It can therefore be removed without affecting the comfort or use of the furniture. Contact us if you need advice on removing this canvas.
On other furniture, such as the demonstrator furniture in the video accessible above, a zipper has been installed on the canvas allowing access to both the underside of the seat and the inside of the backrest. Other furniture has a Velcro closure or simply does not have a canvas under its seat.
A 1/2″ (1/2 inch) socket or ratchet is needed to tighten these bolts. An adjustable wrench can also work, but some spaces may be too tight for the latter tool.
